Common Reasons For Chimney Rebuilds

Chimney rebuilds are most commonly needed in older or historic homes that have been exposed to years of harsh weather and freeze-thaw cycles. But masonry chimneys of all ages can require rebuild for various reasons:

  • Water Damage/Freeze-Thaw – One of the most common causes of chimney deterioration is water damage. When water enters the masonry of the chimney and expands and contracts with temperature changes, it can lead to cracks, holes, and imploding brick. As the water wears away at the chimney system, it can compromise the structural strength and integrity of the chimney, necessitating a rebuild, especially if the damage has been ongoing.
  • Earthquakes – Although less common, earthquakes can cause major cracks and structural compromise within the chimney.
  • Chimney Fires – When a chimney fire breaks out, it can rapidly destroy the chimney and make it unsafe for use. The framing of the chimney can quickly burn up, spreading the fire into nearby framing and insulation, and the masonry can crack when exposed to such high heat. If you’ve experienced a chimney fire, it’s imperative that you have a CSIA-certified professional inspect the chimney and assess the damage.
  • Improper Construction – Another common reason for rebuild is improper construction. If a chimney is not properly built, it can be inefficient and unsafe. From draft and smoke problems to structural compromise, poor construction can cause all sorts of problems and shouldn’t be ignored.
