Chimney Inspections & Evaluations

Are you doing your part to keep your chimney and fireplace operating as smoothly, safely, and effectively as possible? A chimney inspection can help! Annual chimney inspections and evaluations are a must, whether you use your fireplace all the time or once in a blue moon. They’re so important, in fact, that the industry’s top associations, like the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) urge homeowners not to use their chimneys or fireplaces without first having the system professionally inspected.

Inspections Can Detect Problems Early & Keep Dangers At Bay

During an inspection, a professional will take a look at all of the components of your chimney system and determine if anything needs to be done before the next burn season. But not all inspections are created equal – here are the 3 levels and when they should be performed:

  • Level 1 – Level 1 inspections are the most basic chimney inspections and simply include a look at any easily viewable and accessible parts of the chimney system. These inspections don’t require the use of any specialized tools, so they don’t offer an in-depth evaluation. They do, however, typically suffice if a system is operating normally and has been well-maintained.
  • Level 2 – You are urged to have a level 2 inspection performed any time a property is switching hands; a chimney fire has occurred; a change in performance has presented itself; or the appliance or flue liner has been replaced. A level 2 inspection will include a look at the entire interior of the flue and will involve video scanning technology and some simple tools.
  • Level 3 – Level 3 inspections are much more involved than level 1 or 2 inspections and can include some demo work. For this reason, they are really only used as a last resort when there is no other way to determine where a problem or issue lies.
